What grass do I have? Three checks tell you.

1 · Winter color

Was your lawn green in January? That's fescue — the only common Oklahoma lawn that stays green through winter. Straw-brown all winter means Bermuda or zoysia (both go fully dormant).

2 · Feel and shape

Run your hand across it. Fine, wiry blades that spread by runners you can lift with a finger: Bermuda. Stiff, dense, almost prickly cushion underfoot: zoysia. Wide, flat, coarse blades growing in clumps with no runners: tall fescue.

3 · The shade map

Bermuda thins to bare dirt under trees; fescue was probably planted exactly there. Many OKC yards are honestly two lawns — Bermuda in the sun, fescue islands in the shade — which is why we record turf type per lawn before treating anything.
